Some people do wine tasting, others do cheese tasting, I do vegan cupcake tasting (in addition to the other two, that is).
During my visit to Toronto, I checked out the Urban Eatery food court inside Eaton Shopping Center. One outlet that immediately grabbed my curiosity was Urban Herbivore, which serves vegan food and desserts.
I was especially attracted to its pretty display of vegan AND gluten-free cupcakes. It really surprised me to see such a large selection of both egg-free and dairy-free cupcakes.
Here is my rating of four different cupcakes. The overall rating is based on the taste of the cake itself, as well as of the frosting and of any extra toppings.
Ratings: Outstanding / Very good / Mediocre / Bad / Terrible
NB: Each cupcake costs 3,31 Canadian dollars, excl. VAT.
NB 2: If you like vegan desserts, you might also like this earlier 4 Under The Lens post.
Chocolate cake with banana cream center, vanilla icing, and chocolate drizzle.
If you are a chocolate freak, then this is the one for you! The chocolate definitely dominates the taste of banana. Yummy candied cherry and slice of dried banana on the top.
Good with a cup of dark coffee.
Rating: Very good
Vanilla cake with vanilla icing and sprinkles.
Way too sweet for my liking. The frosting, the cake, and the sprinkles are all very sugary.
Given its look & colors, good for a kids’ party.
Almond cake with chocolate frosting and toasted almonds.
Lovely chocolate frosting. The cake itself tastes good, but not as fabulous as the frosting and the almonds on top of it.
Matches well with latte or cappuccino.
Orange spiced cake with vanilla frosting.
Tastes very good and has a good frosting, although the frosting could be less sugary.
Good for an afternoon tea.
Rating: very good.
Other flavors the shop was selling include Carrot Cake, Apple Crumble, Toffee Apple, and Snowball.
So I guess I’ve got a great reason to return to Toronto next year and taste these other flavors for a new 4 Under The Lens blog post!
