4 under the lens: Street food in Zurich

Calling it “street food” might sound like an insult. Any food consumed in Zurich, be it in a restaurant or at a market stand, is just as stylish as the city itself.

And the prices are very Swiss, too… Yes, street food in Zurich is extremely expensive compared to other European cities.

Here is a review of four street food items I’ve had lately in Zurich. The rating is only based on the taste of the food, and not also on the service or on the variety of food items on offer.

Ratings: Outstanding / Very good / Mediocre / Bad / Terrible

Soup (Saftlade, Münstergasse 31)

Food bought at Saftlade, a tiny shop in the pedestrian Niederdorf area, can be either taken away or consumed at one of the three bar tables outdoors.

The shop sells a large range of sandwiches and has a daily hot lunch menu, including two soups to choose from.

I went for the pumpkin-tomato-coconut soup. It tasted good, but far from exceptional.

Price: 8,00 SFr. (incl. a piece of bread)

Rating: Mediocre

Sourdough bread sandwich with cheese (Backbar, Seefeldstrasse 169)

Backbar is a small bakery in Seefeld, Zurich’s affluent district by the lake.

It is open five days a week and offers a wide selection of sandwiches and salads over lunchtime.

Its sourdough bread sandwich with cheese is not big, but makes a very tasty “starter” street food.

Price: 5,50 SFr.

Rating: Very good

Pretzel sandwich with brie cheese (Bretzelkönig, Bahnhofstrasse 57)

There are many stands and shops in Zurich selling pretzels and pretzel sandwiches. But if you’re looking for the best pretzels in town, then you should definitely head to… the King!

Brezelkönig (which indeed means “King of pretzel” in German) is a Swiss-wide chain selling pretzels of all sorts: topped with sunflower seeds, stuffed with tomato and mozzarella, with salami, etc.

My favorite is the pretzel sandwich with brie cheese and walnuts. Tastes awesome!

Price: 7,80 SFr.

Rating: Outstanding

Fruit salad (Fruitmix, Am Rüdenplatz)

Fruitmix is a very colorful fruit stand by the Limmat river.

Besides selling fresh and dried fruits, it also sells fruit salads and juices. It is open all year round, but is – understandably – especially popular during the summer months.

A perfect spot to consume its salads or juices is on Rathausbrücke nearby, where you can sit on a bench and enjoy beautiful views of the river and the city.

Price: 5,00 SFr.

Rating: Very good

    • Yes, that’s true.
I posted a study on my FB page the other day where they say that Zurich is the second most expensive city in the world (after Oslo), but also the city with the highest consumer purchasing power.
So, it’s mostly bad news for tourists, I guess! Which is also not good…
