4 under the lens: Vegetarian restaurants in Vienna

If you happen to be a vegetarian, then you’ll very well know that there are some cities in the world where being a vegetarian is something you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy.

Luckily for me, Vienna turned out to be a great city for vegetarians. It is even a good place for vegans! (But I do eat dairy products.)

Vienna has several restaurants in both its inner and outer districts serving only vegetarian food. And most other restaurants offer vegetarians lots of options so that they don’t have to just order a salad.

Here is a review of four vegetarian restaurants I’ve tried out over the past weeks. The overall rating is based on the quality of the food, the service, and the overall atmosphere (e.g. interiors, outdoor seating).

Ratings: Outstanding / Very good / Mediocre / Bad / Terrible

Nice Rice

This is a very down-to-earth place with pretty outdoor seating in the Raimundhof alleyway, just off Mariahilferstrasse, Vienna’s busiest shopping street.

At lunchtime, customers have the choice among (i) daily menu composed of soup plus main course (8,50 €), (ii) dish of the day (7,90 €), (iii) salad of the day (7,90 €). The quality of the food is very high.

I loved their wild-rice risotto with spinach, dried tomatoes, cashew nuts, sheep-milk cheese, rocket salad, and seed oil.

All their desserts are prepared without eggs, and some are totally vegan. I definitely recommend their vegan blueberry-cocunut cake!

Yamm

This restaurant is very centrally located and has a pay-by-weight, 100% vegetarian buffet. There are around 30 cold and hot dishes to choose from: lasagne, jalapenos, sushi, caprese, basmati rice, pizza…

Its prices are extremely fair and the desserts are actually very cheap. If ordered together with a cup of coffee, a big piece of vegan carrot cake only costs 1 €, which is way below prices at other restaurants in the city center.

Add to that WI-FI and comfortable seating, and you get a great spot for lunch-with-laptop!

Vegetasia

This is a restaurant I am personally very attached to, because it was the very first restaurant I tried out when I arrived in Vienna last summer.

It serves an all-you-can-eat lunch buffet every day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (7,80 € during the week; 9,40 € on weekends). Most of its food is vegan.

A few buffet items: avocado maki, miso soup, seitan salad, bean sprouts salad, basmati rice, steamed dumplings with vegetable filling, and … mock lobster chips!

Tian

If I were to recommend only one restaurant in Vienna, this is it. And I love its motto: “Experience taste”.

Waiters are very friendly and describe in detail what’s on the menu, explaining how meals are cooked and where ingredients come from. It’s a true learning experience!

The restaurant’s beautiful interiors make it a perfect place for a special dinner for two.
