Lunch at… Esstisch

If you’re planning a trip to Vienna for a few days, you should definitely not forget to include the Albertina museum into your program.

It has an impressive permanent art exhibition, Monet to Picasso – The Batliner Collection, and there are always at least two extra temporary art exhibitions on show. The Habsburg staterooms alone make a visit so much worth it.

With so much to see, chances are you’ll need a break at a some point.

If it’s around lunchtime, you can, of course, head to the museum’s own restaurant, DO & CO Albertina, or to the lovely Café Mozart vis-à-vis the museum. Or you might try some other place where you’re pretty sure you won’t see any tourist. Yes, in the very middle of Vienna’s inner city!

This morning, after spending a couple of hours at the Albertina, I decided to go for lunch at Esstisch, a small, cosy restaurant where many locals working in the city center go to grab a take-away lunch. But there are also a few tables if you prefer to stay in. To be precise: there is one big table inside with seating for around 12, plus two small tables for two outside.

I was very happy when I saw that the outdoor table on the left was free!

Esstisch has a weekly menu: one soup of the day, five different main courses, and six salad varieties.

I went for the soup of the day, which was tomato soup with basil and parmesan, plus a big salad, meaning that I could choose four salad varieties. My choice:

  1. couscous with tomatoes, turmeric, parsley, and cashew nuts;
  2. lentils with gorgonzola, dried tomatoes, red onions, and chives;
  3. beans with feta cheese, lemon, young onions, dill, and parsley;
  4. summer salad with figs, sheep-milk cheese, roasted almonds, and honey vinaigrette.

The food was very good and the portions extremely generous. It would have been a perfect lunch, had it not been for the way too much onion in the food. Nevertheless, I repeat, the food was really good.

This is a restaurant I would recommend for a solo lunch or a take-away lunch. If you’re lucky enough to find one of the two outdoor tables free, then grab it. Dorotheergasse is a very calm and pleasant street to enjoy an outdoor lunch!
